On the metal abundances inside mixed-morphology supernova remnants: the case of IC443 and G166.0+4.3

چکیده
Context. Recent developments on the study of mixed morphology supernova remnants (MMSNRs) have revealed the presence of metal rich X-ray emitting plasma inside a fraction of these remnant, a feature not properly addressed by traditional models for these objects. Aims. Radial profiles of thermodynamical and chemical parameters are needed for a fruitful comparison of data and model of MMSNRs, but these are available only in a few cases. Methods. We analyze XMM-Newton data of two MMSNRs, namely IC443 and G166.0+4.3, previously known to have solar metal abundances, and we perform spatially resolved spectral analysis of the X-ray emission. Results. We detected enhanced abundances of Ne, Mg and Si in the hard X-ray bright peak in the north of IC443, and of S in the outer regions of G166.0+4.3. The metal abundances are not distributed uniformly in both remnants. The evaporating clouds model and the radiative SNR model fail to reproduce consistently all the observational results. Conclusions. We suggest that further deep X-ray observations of MMSNRs may reveal more metal rich objects. More detailed models which include ISM-ejecta mixing are needed to explain the nature of this growing subclass of MMSNRs.

ISO – SWS spectroscopy of IC 443 and the origin of the IRAS 12 and 25 μ m emission from radiative supernova remnants ⋆
ISO–SWS spectral observations of the supernova remnant IC443 are presented. Like other radiative SNRs, this object is characterized by prominent line–emitting filaments and relatively strong IRAS 12 and 25 m emission which is commonly interpreted as thermal radiation from very small grains stochastically heated by collisions with the hot plasma behind the shock front. This interpretation is cha...
متن کاملASCA X - Ray Spectroscopy of LMC Supernova Remnants and the Metal Abundances of the LMC
We present the results of X-ray spectroscopy of a flux-limited sample of seven middle-aged supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC): N23, N49, N63A, DEM71, N132D, 0453−68.5, and N49B. We constructed self-consistent nonequilibrium ionization SNR models assuming a Sedov solution for the dynamical evolution, and then applied the resulting spectral models to the data obtained b...
متن کاملConstraints on cosmic-ray origin from TeV gamma-ray observations of supernova remnants
If supernova remnants (SNRs) are the site of cosmicray acceleration, the associated nuclear interactions should result in an observable flux of γ-rays for the nearest SNRs. Measurements of the TeV γ-ray flux from six nearby, radio-bright SNRs have been made with the Whipple Observatory imaging air Čerenkov telescope over the period September 1993 to June 1996. No significant emission has been d...

We report on the Chandra observations of the archetypical mixed morphology (or thermal composite) supernova remnant, W44. As with other mixed morphology remnants, W44's projected center is bright in thermal X-rays. It has an obvious radio shell, but no discernable X-ray shell. In addition, X-ray bright 'knots' dot W44's image. The spectral analysis of the Chandra data show that the remnant's ho...
متن کاملXmm-newton Observations of the Supernova Remnant Ic443: I. Soft X-ray Emission from Shocked Interstellar Medium
The shocked interstellar medium around IC443 produces strong X-ray emission in the soft energy band (E . 1.5 keV). We present an analysis of such emission as observed with the EPIC MOS cameras on board the XMM-Newton observatory, with the purpose to find clear signatures of the interactions with the interstellar medium (ISM) in the X-ray band, which may complement results obtained in other wave...
